How I will look after you
Why choose Mr Radford for your cataract surgery?
You will be looked after by a specialist cataract surgeon with more than 25 years’ experience of performing routine-to-complex cataract surgery.
Mr Radford listens to patients, puts them at ease, is very approachable and explains everything very clearly. Patients comment how refreshing is to talk to a consultant who is “down to earth”.
Your questions are encouraged and will be answered fully. Having any concerns discussed early will help you relax and be confident going ahead with cataract surgery.
All your care before and after surgery will be provided by Mr Radford and experienced ophthalmic trained nurses. You are going to be looked after by a very caring team of dedicated and kind people. Many of these staff choose Mr Radford to perform cataract surgery on their own family members.
Mr Radford has performed more than 10,000 cataract cases. These regularly include dense cataracts, white cataracts, patients with very long or extreme short sight, cataracts after eye trauma, heredity cataracts or cataracts occurring from medication or illness, which often affects young adults.
With vast experience of difficult and complex cataracts, Mr Radford has been able to develop techniques that make surgery safer, quicker and painless.
He will help you understand lens implant choices and the possibility of spectacle free vision after surgery.
An audit review of cataract surgery performed by Mr Radford showed 99% of patients achieved driving vision or better after modern cataract surgery in the absence of other eye problems.
If there are age-related macular degeneration, diabetic changes or other eye problems unrelated to cataract, then vision may not improve enough to reach driving standard. The retina and macula, along with the optic nerve, must be healthy to have good vision.
First-hand experience
Mr Radford had cataract surgery himself in 2014 so he knows exactly what it is like to worry about the operation beforehand.
He knows what patients will want to ask about the options available, the lens types, what refraction or vision is possible afterwards and especially what it is like to have the surgery awake under local anaesthetic.
“It was fine! A different experience, but not painful just bright lights and swirling water affects. I fully appreciate your concerns and will do everything I can with my excellent team to make your operation equally good.” Ray Radford
A dedicated surgery, theatre and ward team will look after you on the day of surgery making you as comfortable and relaxed as they can. This professional team has many years of experience in providing safe, efficient, high quality care and will help you with positioning and comfort, so the procedure will not start until you are ready.
We regularly see patients with breathing problems, claustrophobia, neck problems, reflux, vertigo and tremor and know how to make them feel at ease so the operation goes smoothly.
Many people worry about keeping their eye open or blinking but this is prevented by a small comfortable guard. Once you are made comfortable, the operation typically takes just 8-15 minutes.
You are in good hands with a great team
